Multi-Camera Video Production in NYC: When You Need It

You're planning a panel, a gala, a conference session or a live podcast taping somewhere in the city, and someone asked whether you need "more than one camera." It's a fair question — and the honest answer is that it depends on your event, your edit and how much you can afford to miss. Good corporate event videography lives or dies on whether you caught the moment that mattered, and a single camera is a single point of failure.

This guide explains what multi-camera production actually is, when it's worth the money, how many cameras your event really needs, and what it adds to a quote. No jargon, no upsell — just what a Brooklyn crew that has shot 4,500+ projects would tell you before you book.

What multi-camera production is — and when to use it

Multi-camera production means filming the same moment from two or more angles at once, all running simultaneously so nothing is missed and the edit has choices. Instead of one operator panning between a speaker and the crowd, you get a locked wide shot, a tight shot on the speaker, and often a roaming camera for reactions and B-roll — recorded in sync and cut together in post.

You need it any time the action can't be repeated. A keynote happens once. A standing ovation happens once. A panelist's best line lands once, and if your only camera was zoomed on the wrong person, it's gone. Multi-cam buys you insurance and storytelling at the same time.

Use a single camera for a simple talking-head interview, a short testimonial, or a controlled shoot where you can reset and go again. Reach for multi-cam when the event is live, unrepeatable, and has more than one thing worth watching at the same time.

Panels, conferences, podcasts and performances

Some formats are multi-camera by nature. Here's where it earns its keep:

How many cameras your event actually needs

More cameras isn't automatically better — it's a cost and a crew decision. Here's a practical starting point. SHMONG quotes every project individually, so treat this as a guide, not a menu.

SetupGood forWhat you get
1 cameraInterview, short testimonial, simple talkOne angle, operator follows the action
2 camerasFireside chat, single-host podcast, small panelWide + tight, clean cutting between two looks
3 camerasFull panel, keynote, multi-host podcastWide, speaker tight, roaming reactions/B-roll
4+ camerasGala, conference stage, live performanceStage wide, two tights, crowd/jib angle for scale

A quick rule: count the things happening at once that you'd regret missing. One speaker and a quiet room is one camera. A speaker, a reacting panel and a 300-person crowd is three or four. If you're livestreaming, add a camera dedicated to the clean program feed so the stream and the archive edit don't compete.

What multi-cam adds to the cost

Every added camera is roughly another camera body, another operator (or a locked-off angle someone still has to set and monitor), more setup time on site, and more work in the edit to sync and cut the angles. That's why a three-camera conference shoot costs more than a one-camera interview — you're paying for coverage you can't recreate later.

Across NYC, typical rates for crewed event coverage scale with camera count, crew size and hours; multi-cam conference and gala work sits at the higher end for exactly these reasons. We don't publish a rate card because the honest number depends on your run-of-show. What we can promise: SHMONG quotes per project with a written quote within 24 hours (usually same day), a $1,000 minimum booking, and every production includes all your raw footage at no extra charge — all angles, not just the finished cut.

Our multi-cam setup and post workflow

We shoot on 4K cinema cameras (RED and Sony FX series) with pro lighting, wireless lavaliers for clean speaker audio, and gimbals for roaming angles. For a typical three-camera panel, that's a locked wide, a tight on the active speaker, and a third operator catching reactions, audience and B-roll — all recording at once with synced audio pulled straight from the room or the venue's board.

In post we sync every angle in Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, color-match the cameras so the cut looks like one film instead of three, and edit to your run-of-show. You get the finished multi-cam edit, plus any clips or vertical cut-downs you need for social — and all the raw angles to keep.

We're based at 68 Jay St in DUMBO and have shot multi-camera work at venues across the city, from the University Club for UNGA-week podcast recordings to S&P Global, the LinkedIn building and NASDAQ MarketSite in Times Square. We cover all five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester and northern New Jersey.

Frequently asked questions

How many cameras do I need for a conference panel?

Most full panels work best with three cameras: a wide for context, a tight on the active speaker, and a roaming camera for reactions and B-roll. A small two-person fireside chat can often be covered well with two. We'll recommend a count based on your run-of-show.

Does multi-camera cost more than a single camera?

Yes — each added camera means another operator, more setup time, and more syncing and cutting in post. That's why multi-cam conference and gala work sits at the higher end of typical NYC rates. SHMONG quotes per project, with a $1,000 minimum and a written quote within 24 hours.

Do I get the footage from every camera?

Yes. Every SHMONG production includes all raw footage at no extra charge — all angles, not just the finished edit. Raw footage is delivered in 24–48 hours, and finished multi-cam edits in 5–7 business days.

Can you livestream a multi-camera event?

Yes. For a livestream we typically dedicate a camera to the clean program feed so the stream and your archive edit don't compete for angles. Tell us your platform and run-of-show and we'll scope the crew and gear in your quote.

What NYC venues have you filmed multi-cam at?

We've shot multi-camera work at venues including S&P Global, the LinkedIn building, NASDAQ MarketSite in Times Square and the University Club for UNGA-week podcast recordings. We're based in DUMBO and cover all five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester and northern New Jersey.

How do I get a quote?

Send us your date, location and what's happening on stage, by email at contact@shmong.tv or through the form at /contact. You'll get a written quote within 24 hours, usually the same day, with a recommended camera count for your event.
